What are the CMA's veterinary prescription changes?
In March 2026 the Competition and Markets Authority published its final report on veterinary services for household pets. Vets must now offer a written prescription whenever they prescribe, and the rules keep tightening through 2027. Is it legal to buy my pet's medication online instead of at the vet?
Yes, it is entirely legal. Vets in the UK are required to provide a portable written prescription if requested. You can then upload this on fetchpharm to securely buy from any regulated online pharmacy at a fraction of the cost.
Why is medication sometimes cheaper online than at the vet?
Online pharmacies buy in far greater volume and carry lower overheads than a veterinary practice, so their prices for the same licensed medicine are often 50-60% lower. Your practice still provides all the clinical care; the pharmacy simply fulfils the prescription.
Can I compare prices without a prescription?
Yes, for flea, tick and worming treatments that don't need a prescription. Choose the Flea, tick and worming tab at the top of the page, pick your pet and the treatment you want to buy. Prescription-only medicines are different: UK medicines advertising rules mean their prices can only be shown to someone holding a valid prescription, so for those we ask you to upload your script first. It takes less than a minute and no account is needed.
How long is my prescription valid for?
Most written veterinary prescriptions are valid for six months from the date of issue, unless your vet has specified a shorter period. The expiry date is printed on the prescription itself, and we will flag it when you upload.
Are the online pharmacies you compare safe and regulated?
